What is DistriBuild?
-
DistriBuild is a distributed build (parallel compilation) solution. It distributes compilation
tasks among several computers connected by a network, thus speeding up the build process.
-
What is the development status of the project?
-
At the moment, the project is in development (pre-alpha) stage, although quite usable. All the
necessary infrastructure works, and is being subject of testing and bugfixing. First alpha version
will be soon available for public testing.
-
What development platforms does DistriBuild currently support?
-
Current version of DistriBuild has been successfully ran on the following platforms:
- Microsoft Visual Studio 7 (.NET 2003), 'devenv' command line
-
What development platforms are in plans for DistriBuild to support?
-
Currently we focus on MS Visual Studio development platform. There is ongoing work on improving .NET 2003
target reliability and performance, and also to add a GUI front end in the form of an add-in for the Visual
Studio IDE. Then, Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 targets are planned. In the broader future we also think of
Linux version for the gcc/g++ compiler and make-based builds.
-
Is it free?
-
The purpose of currently published versions is to gain feedback on the product stability and functionality.
For now, it's in alpha stage, but already is quite usable. It can help to speed up building many Visual
Studio projects, although some untypical settings may cause failures. These alpha (and beta, in later
time) versions are intended to be used totally free of charge, without any
limitation of functionality (and no warranty), but each version will have an expiration date.
When it expires, if you wish to continue using DistriBuild, you will have to download more recent version
with prolonged expiration date. Over time, DistriBuild is intended to evolve into some kind of commercial
software.
-
As DistriBuild user, am I really participating in test phase?
-
Yes, you are, but in exchange you take advantage of using this software for free during this phase.
Many companies carries out similar public beta tests. Many of them does it covertly, not telling the users
about potential substandard quality of the software (and what's worse, taking money for it). Instead,
we tell you explicitly that it's an alpha release, and offer it for absolutely free, without any limitations
(except the time limit). You should expect bugs, if you find some, please report them on the forum.
